August Ewald
August Ewald ( June 7 1849 in Darmstadt , † 1924 ) was a German physiologist .
From 1867 he studied in Heidelberg, Bonn and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1873. From 1874 he was an assistant at Wilhelm Kühne’s Physiological Institute in Heidelberg, where he worked on the photochemistry of the retina and the visual purple was investigated. In 1880 he qualified as Privatdozent and in 1883 as associate professor of physiology and histology in Heidelberg.

August Ewald and Dr Ayres are the only assistants to Dr Kühne who I know of. It was a job to establish who was the right Ewald as it seems there are many people of that name who were scientists in the late 19th Century. See Here for the connection with Helmholtz.
